PORTLAND, Ore. (March 3, 2010) -- CCLC®, a Portland-based nationwide child care provider dedicated to quality employer-sponsored early childhood education, has partnered with the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) for a $10,000 year-long sponsorship of the Discovery Lab, located in OMSI’s early education exhibit hall, Science Playground. OMSI’s Discovery Lab is designed to stimulate curiosity, excitement and discovery for children ages 1-6. Children learn about basic chemical reactions, mix colors, paint, and experience a variety of crafts. The Discovery Lab also contains the Discovery Science area featuring two rotating sets of twelve thematic discovery boxes for families to explore. The CCLC sponsorship will provide support for the ongoing operations of the Discovery Lab.

"Discovery Lab is an excellent opportunity for families to engage in innovative, active and playful science learning," said Fran Durekas, Founder and Chief Development Officer for CCLC. "CCLC has a long standing history of educating Portland area children and promoting science has always been a focus of our curriculum. Our partnership with OMSI is a natural extension of our commitment to providing quality science education to young children."

"OMSI and CCLC share a common mission and audience," said OMSI president Nancy Stueber. "We believe science literacy begins in infancy and is a life-long process. We are family-focused and incorporate guided discovery as a means of introducing skills, building knowledge and enhancing self-esteem among children."

OMSI’s Science Playground is committed to families with newborn to six-year-old children and is designed to give them the opportunity to develop fun and meaningful interactive learning through play. A variety of experimental stations are provided throughout the hall to encourage the natural curiosity of young visitors. This includes a stimulating infant area; a gigantic sandbox; a water area; a reading area; physical science exhibits and the Animal Secrets exhibit. The Discovery Lab can be reserved for private lab classes featuring stories, hands-on demonstrations and explorations, experiment stations, a hands-on project and reference sheet for teachers.
